New Excavations at Fuwairit by the Origins of Doha Teamعمليات تنقيب جديدة لفريق أصول الدوحة في منطقة فويريط

The Origins of Doha Project team is excited to announce the start of a 4-year archaeological research project at Fuwairit on the northeast coast of Qatar.

Fuwairit was an important coastal settlement in the centuries preceding Qatar’s unification, rising to regional prominence as the home of the Al Thani during the early 19th century. However, there are few early written references to sites along the northern coast of Qatar and archaeological excavation could reveal much about life in Qatar in the 18th and 19th centuries. In addition to excavations at the site, we will promote the long-term protection of Fuwairit, and develop ways that the archaeological remains can be better presented to the public.

By excavating the site and analysing the artefacts we find, we hope to learn how daily life and the economy of smaller coastal settlements compared to Doha. We will also discover more about how the people of Qatar lived before the settlement of Doha itself.

The archaeological site at Fuwairit consists of ruined and buried buildings to the south of Jebel Fuwairit and to the west of Fuwairit beach and a mangrove swamp. To the south of the archaeological site are the ruined buildings of the historic village of Fuwairit. Directly inland from Fuwairit the site of Zarqa contains the remains of a mosque, fort and a number of other ruined structures. These represent a fortified site that would have provided the water and possibly agricultural areas utilised by the former inhabitants of Fuwairit.

الموقع الأثري في فويريط يتكون من المباني المهدمة والمدفونة جنوب جبل فويريط وإلى المنطقة الغربية لشاطىء فويريط ومستنقعات أشجار القرم، والجانب الجنوبي للموقع الأثري هي المباني المهدمة في القرية التاريخية من فويريط ، ويتداخل مباشرةً مع منطقة فويريط موقع الزرقاء الذي يحتوي على بقايا مسجد و حصن وعدد من الهياكل مدمرة هي الأخرى . وتمثل هذه المنطقة الموقع المحصن الذي كانت توفر المياه والمناطق ربما الزراعية التي كان يستخدمها السكان السابقين من فويريط
